Fenway area filling begins.
1880
The Beacon Street Land Association, private owners, the city, and the Boston Water Power Company fill flats and marshes around the Back Bay Fens park, then being created, to make today’s land on either side of Charlesgate, between Massachusetts Avenue and the Fens, in the Symphony Road/Gainsborough Street area, Huntington Avenue from Forsyth Way to Longwood Avenue, between Huntington Avenue and the Fens, in the Ruggles/Parker/Ward Streets area, and the Fenway area itself. Filling was completed in 1898.
